At last! “The Big Bang” is how a season-ender episode should be– fun, poignant, epic, intimate, and without a stupid-arse Emo Doctor Is Emo ending. And… what a great use of wibbly-wobbly timey-whimey! I’m so happy for Rory, and actually liked Amy in the episode! Plus… HOORAY! A MARRIED COUPLE ARE THE COMPANIONS!!!!!!!!! It’s about freaking time.
(Although, I’m sure there will be now all sorts of “marriage agenda” arguments.)
More later in the summer on this topic, I think– once I’m done squeeing, and once I’ve had a chance to formulate my Overall Theory About Why I Hate Amy Sometimes (And Why It’s Only Sometimes).
Knowing fandom like I do, though, I can’t help but wonder how long it will take before:

Lame, I know, but I keep thinking of Pandora Boxx when there’s talk about the Pandorica. (What, you don’t watch RuPaul’s Drag Race? FOR SHAME.
Cut for your protection….

Yanno, I’m cool like that, referring to “The Big Bang” as “Event One” since that’s wot it was called in “Terminus.” (A vastly underrated episode, as many people are distracted by Nyssa droppin’ ‘em to pay attention to the plot….)
So, anyway, I’m popping in here to make commentary in a summary sort of way about what I’ve seen since my last post, as I wait with antici…pation for the resolve of “The Pandorica Opens” cliffhanger. (The viewing society I’m in is gathering Saturday evening, to watch as soon as the magic pixie delivery elves make with the file. I hope to Kroll we’re not disappointed, unlike the LAST time we gathered on a U.K. transmission day.) (That would be for “Journey’s End,” if you’re keeping track, which of course you are!)
Just click on the “More” and we’ll begin….

I totally get now how Hilary Clinton fans felt the summer of 2008. Seriously. It was all “Obama this” and “Obama that” with people thinking he was a) the second coming b) guaranteed to help the Cubs finally win a world series c) tasting great (while being less filling). The bitter Clinton-ites claimed the Obama-ites were “drinking the Kool-Aid” and, that even if you were merely ok with Obama being the nominee– not even granting him mad slicing, dicing, or julienne frying skillz– you were even more stupid than the people who thought Sarah Palin was a witty and intelligent woman.
I have reached that point with my fellow Doctor Who fans. And that makes me sad indeed. Instead of rejoicing in the return of the Doctor for a proper season, I am wondering if I should even bother watching.
You can read all my whinging past the cut….

Saturday was all about panels for me: being on them, seeing others. I did some panel at 10 a.m. (which was so memorable that I have no idea what it was now), another one (on conventions) at 11 a.m., and Favorite Doctor Who Moments at 4 p.m. I took in the Louise Page slide show at 1 p.m., saw most of Georgia Moffett’s interview, looked in on the Comics-to-Other-Media panel. In the evening, I helped judge workmanship in the Masquerade. I love Masquerades! I’ve been costuming for 30 years this year, for both myself and others, so I have great familiarity with them. (No, please don’t ask what costumes I’ve done lately– I haven’t, other than Valerie’s Halloween outfits. I have a long list of what’s next, once my size stops being an issue.) And then, MORE LOBBYCON! Until 2 a.m.!!!!!!! (Which included a good discussion with fellow CT staff as to how to fit in Moths with the con’s usual evening activities.)
Sunday, more panels for me, starting with the Liars’ Panel at 10 a.m. Everyone on the panel agreed that, in the future, the panel needs to be in the evening, so we can make more dirty jokes and perhaps be more witty. (10 a.m. on Sunday isn’t good for the bon mots.) I also talked about fan films at noon. In between panels, I hung a bit with a college friend and his family, who are local to L.A. The son has become a big Doctor Who fan, so he was having a great time. His little sister, not so much.
Chicks Dig Time Lords had its official launch panel at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. We gave a good panel, the 9 or 12 of us squeezed onto the dais. I found it fairly annoying, though, that in many people’s minds, DW fandom didn’t exist until the Internest, so therefore all of my 1980’s experiences don’t count. This attitude permeated the panelists as well as the audience. I can understand that from a personal-reference standpoint, because, yeah, many fans came aboard during the Wilderness Years or during the New Series, and fandom as they first found it is what they know. But I was feeling that what I had to offer was being discounted because the events happened decades ago. (And, you know, it’s probably just my ego bitching here, not what really went on in the panel.)
After the panel, we had a spontaneous book-signing session in the pre-function space. I signed a number of copies, thereby convincing my friend’s son that I was famous. (Sweet boy!) Afterwards, hung out with people until Closing Ceremonies, then did dinner, then more Lobbycon, and then bed, relatively early at 11 p.m.
Monday, my BFF and I went to Amoeba Records, Downtown Disney, and Pasadena (the last by error, thanks Google Maps!). In the ayem, though, I camped out by the pool in the sun, with a book and a Mountain Dew. Ah, bliss. And then, back to snowy and cold Chicago on Tuesday. The end.

Note: Blogging at the Con, made of fail! Although, did tweet a little bit. Too busy doing stuff to ruminate. So now I’m reduced to catching up after the fact. And, if you go beyond the “more”, you’ll read all about Friday, some of which was actually written on the Friday of the convention. WOW!

In theory, I can add a photo from my iPhone to a post written on said device. In reality…. I see that it just adds them at the end of the post, no options for editing. Oh well. Enjoy this photo of Dot the Leopard eating in the hotel bar.

It’s nearly 10 pm on Thursday night, and for all intents and purposes, the convention has begun. The lobby undulates with Doctor Who fans making their way through the first bottle of both booze and convo. (Not everyone drinks, of course, but there are quite a number of people who drink for two here… or at any con, really.) Although you’d think a con is only as good as it’s programming, the social scene matters equally. Sometimes it’s more important, if there’s not much going on during the day.
I really think that what helped Chicago TARDIS along the first few years was a splendid bar to hang in and around. Once we moved to a hotel sans such a convenient hangout, the con seemed much quieter. Now we have an awesome lobby again, CT is much more bustling. If only we can convince the bar to stay open past 7 p.m. on Thursday night…..

Ohhhhhkay. So, yeah, the New Trailer aired on BBC on Saturday evening, and soon propagated to the Internest, including places where Americans like me could actually see it. There’s been a whole buncha wank already, naturelment. Fortunately, I’ve managed to avoid actually reading it, although I did skim over several Telling Cut Tags over on Live Journal. (No, sorry, not going into the New Series section at Gallifrey Base, not unless I have to wade in as A Power That Be.)
The following wank, therefore, is all my own. It is my wank because I thought of it. Ah hem ah hem. My Wank, by J.A. Kelley (Mrs.)
It wasn’t so much a promo of the upcoming series as an excuse to show off some really kewl CGI FX. And, oh, yeah, there was the Doctor and Amy. It didn’t really want to make me watch; didn’t even get me the teeniest bit excited over the forthcoming series. And, hell if it didn’t borrow crap from “New New Earth” (lying on the grass), and the whole Ten/Rose batship (that longing pause gazing into each other’s eyes in what could have been (and probably was) interpreted in a “OMG! OTP!” way). *sigh*
(Please please please, O Great and Mighty Kroll, don’t let the shippers go too batshit with Eleven and Amy. I don’t care if they’re pretty together!)
And, um, it’s supposed to be 3D-enabled, I gather. Why? Is it going to be shown in British cinemas before a 3D film? I don’t think 3D technology has spread to televisions, at least not without the use of those lame-arse polorizing plastic glasses they pass out before the start of Avatar. But whatevs, as my daughter says. I suspect the mandate was “use every freaking cgi fx you can, who cares if anyone can actually see it in 3D!!!!!!!!”
And thus endeth my wank du jour. Ahem ahem. I’m off to play the grand piano to Gallifrey, where the theory is that I will attempt bloggage several times during the course of the convention. Whether or not I succeed is another matter.
