The First Federation Film Filming

the-first-federation-film-filming

Oh, yeah, ’bout that time again, where I dip into the ol’ memory pool because of having recently done something same-ol, same-ol. In October, my daughter and I spent an afternoon helping with (and appearing in) various short bits for a film-within-a-film that several Federation types are working on as an outside project. (i.e. not associated with the Feds per se, although, really everyone there on Saturday had been associated with (and even appeared in, or at least auditioned for) a Federation Film…..) Naturally, that experience has now set the way-back machine in my mind for the end of July, 1983, and the filming of “The Five Faces of Doctor Booh.”

Come with me now as I spin the nutrasweet logo and chant “back, back, back in time….”

Panopticon West, July 1983

panopticon-west-july-1983

Having recently returned from attending my 21st out-of-state Doctor Who convention, it’s only fitting that I now blog about my first one. The Virgin Tour, as it were! (And two years before Madonna’s, too!)

In other words, yes, it’s that time again, to hop in the TARDIS and pop back to July of 1983, when Teenage!Jenn hit the road with a busload of like-minded fen to check out Panopticon West 1983 in the wilds of Columbus, Ohio. Read the rest of this entry »

The Prelude Before the Storm, summer 1983

the-prelude-before-the-storm-summer-1983

Yes! It’s another installment of Teenage!Jenn and Her Adventures In Doctor Who Fandom! (Although, pretty soon in the narrative, I will reach the big 2-0 and thus won’t technically be a teenager.) When we last connected with Teenage!Jenn, she had just had the Weekend that Would Change Her Life Forever And Ever (and never to part– whoops! Didn’t mean to rickroll you there!)

But what happened next? You might very well arsk. Here’s the story….

The Weekend That Changed My Life, May 1983

Oooh, it sounds sooooooooooooooooooooo dramatic, doesn’t it? “In a span of 48 hours, my life was totally, completely changed– changed for the better, I might add!” It’s true, though. Although the changes were by nature personal, some of them had something big to do with Doctor Who.

Oh, go on, you know you want the drama! Keep on reading, won’t you?

The Doctor Comes to Chicago, February 1983

I’m keeping the First!Masquerade entry on pause for a bit longer, as I am reminded of a lot of Significant Fannish Anniversaries coming up in the near future. I want to get to the point in the telling of my fannish history where I can use the Significant Anniversary of an Event to be the reason for blogging about it.

(Yes, we’ll see how long that idea lasts, shall we?) Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Anniversary!

Twenty-five years ago today, the Federation (although we weren’t known as that yet) filmed its first fan video, “The Five Faces of Doctor Booh.” Gah, I feel old.

(I hope to get up to that day in my fannish memory blogging soon– now that the current season is over and all that…. And, really, it’s just an entry (or two) before I get there…..)

My First Doctor Who Convention, 1982

Its name lives on in the murky annals of pre-Internest Doctor Who fandom:

Sweatcon.

Oh, all right, it’s official name was Comicon/Panopticon West 1982, but the con earned the Sweatcon moniker. Read the rest of this entry »

Gender and DW Fandom

With the third series going on in the U.K., and the first series finally coming home to roost on U.S. PBS stations, I find myself caught up in nostalgia about the fandom. And, in a way, I long for the salad days of the ’80’s, because women were not only treated with respect, but were actually in charge of things. These days, females are marginalized in the fandom. And nowhere is that more apparent than at conventions.

He Really *Is* Back!

he-really-is-back

Oh, yes, indeed, I am well aware of Doctor Who being on its third series of the New School Version in the U.K., just as I am quite conscious of the first series having aired on BBC America and the first two series having aired on SciFi here in the States. I’m quite caught up on all the episodes, thank you very much.

For an Old School fan like me, though, the Doctor is really just returning this Sunday night at 10 p.m., when WTTW, the local PBS station, airs “Rose.”

And, yes, I’m about to wax nostalgic again! I did warn you that would happen you know.
