Its name lives on in the murky annals of pre-Internest Doctor Who fandom:
Sweatcon.
Oh, all right, it’s official name was Comicon/Panopticon West 1982, but the con earned the Sweatcon moniker. Read the rest of this entry »

So, last Saturday was the Eurovision contest, which delayed us seeing the next Moffat two-parter by a week. Oooh, all eyes are on Steven Moffatt now that he’s been named Official Producer Officially. Personally, I couldn’t be happier, because his episodes have shown that he has a great sense of who the Doctor is and what he should be doing. Plus, he’s not at all on board with the “Rose’s So Perfect, She’s So Right As Rain, She’s Gonna Keep on Having His Tyme Babezzz Again and Again” program that RTD has spearheaded.
Speaking of Rose, there was way too much of her in the trailer for the second half of the season that aired during Eurovision (and can be found on various Youse Tubes for those poor slobs like me wot live outside the U.K. and are therefore denied most of the Doctor Who web content this season). Still, she was almost tolerable, ’cause she was all about taking out the baddies with a big gun instead of hunting the Doctor down to snog him and make the tyme babezzz. Now, if Rose is back to being 1st season Rose– you know, the plucky young lady who was able to kick butt and didn’t have a huge desire to procreate repeatedly with the Last of the Time Lords– that would be awesome. I bet she won’t be, though, ’cause that’s how RTD has been rolling. Grrrrrrr. Arrrrrrgh.
I’m really wondering, though, about “The Darkness” that kept coming up in the trailer. The Granddad’s line about the stars disappearing reminded me so much of A Wrinkle in Time that I’m wondering if all sorts of parallel universes might be coming together, and, if so, will Rose’s lips look reaaaaaaaaallllly gross in two dimensions. Also, it’s sure as shinola that the bees disappearing will be the Canary in the Cage to The Darkness’ arrival. Unfortunately, though, the M. Night Shyamalin film The Happening comes out before the series’ finale airs, so everyone is going to be “Argh, RTD stole that idea,” when he actually didn’t. (Unless he read pre-production stuff on, say, AICN or even IMDB.)
So, yeah, it was nice to have the week off, as it were, from the Ongoing Wank. I am so looking forward to being quiet in the library, it isn’t funny. I want something good to hang onto, to better stand the Wankfest that will be the End of the Season Stories.

In short: a delightful palate cleaner, frothy yet a jolly good yarn.

Well, this episode wasn’t as wanky as I feared it would be, but it still had a lot to go “huh?” about. Fortunately, most of the “huh?” came afters.

Well, my brain didn’t actually implode after having watched yet another Doctor Who episode last night, but I certainly got a migraine! (Although, in truth, the migraine came about while watching Confidential at 1.7 speed– fast enough to get through it relatively painlessly, slow enough to know what was said.) Still, I am pleased to report that “The Poison Sky” didn’t suck.

Hoo boy! At last! A solid return to something else that Doctor Who does very well indeed– at least Old School Who, that is. Space Opera! Yays!
I haven’t even read spoilers about the second half, and already I find that Helen Raynor has more than redeemed herself.

Wow.
A powerful, wondrous story, a ooey sundae of contrasts with a sprinkling of sadness on top that permeates the tale, even with the somewhat happy ending.

Oh, okay, you’re right, should technically be “Second Impressions,” since I had to rewatch this episode in order to blather on about it. The first time around, it made not much sense at all, but that was because I had to have the sound down low as my husband was doing some Working From Home in the next room. Also, my daughter was being a good distraction as she watched it with me.
This time, however, I was able to enjoy it at proper volume and without distractions (well, other than that robocall urging me to see Northwestern host the Big 10 Softball Tournament this coming weekend). I don’t know why I delayed so long. It was amazing!

Yep, the birds are chirping (except the one who kamakazied against our deck door and is now just a corpse on the deck– euuuuuuuuuuuuuu), the sun is shining, it’s a warm, bright, sunny day. Naturally, it’s perfect weather to stay inside and catch up on Doctor Who.
Well, not really, but if I want to go hang w/ my friends tonight, I have to rewatch “Fires of Pompeii” plus see for the first time “Planet of the Ood” and “The Sontaran Stragegem”, so that I can properly appreciate “The Poison Sky.”
I tell ya, Doctor Who hasn’t exactly been appointment viewing for me this season. Shocking, I know. Nevertheless, I’m going to blast through a couple episodes today (and hopefully blog about them, too, so I can be all caught up again.)
Anyway, time to get some more tea, my lappy, and the remote. (’cause, yeah, I’m Old School and actually have to watch the episodes on the teevee. Ok, or on the iPod, but it’s only comfortable watching multiple episodes on the iPod when squeezed into an airplane seat. (Easy support of the arms, don’t you know.)
