Yanno, I don’t really have much to say at all about this story. Perhaps its because I watched it while recovering from a particularly nasty bout of stomach flu. More likely, it’s because the past month’s wankage re the Eleventh Doctor has annoyed me to the point where I don’t give a flying flapdoodle about anything related to the new series. In any case, here’s what little I can come up with regarding the story:
So, yeah, the teaser was brilliant, especially the continuous 360° pan around the Doctor, and the “allons-y” in tandem. I liked Jackson’s storyline– how he thought he was the Doctor, and how he became as heroic as the Doctor at the end. I also liked how a woman yet again resisted Cyberconversion. (Oh, hello, Yvonne, is your memory that short?) And the giant Godzilla Cyberman rising along the Thames was amusing, too. It wasn’t a very serious episode, and it was more uplifting than the previous Christmas special (”Voyage of the Damned,” and, yes, short term memory is the first to go!). In short, some good, bombastic RTD all around.
As I was watching it, I was thinking that I will really miss David Tennant as the Doctor. A month (give or take) later, though– I just don’t want to know. I find I have no interest in the 2009 specials, because he’s going, and they’re all going to be over-the-top and filled with stunt casting and shit (hello, Michelle Williams!), just because they’re specials.
So, yeah, this review wasn’t a review at all. I can only hope that attending Gallifrey next month will revive my spirits and thus make my reviews of the Specials much less snarky. It seems that every 10 years or so, though, I get “off” fandom for awhile– i.e. it gets just too sucky for me to want to deal with. The end of the decade plays havoc with my Time Lord Geekiness.

Kroll help me, this is late. I got too caught up in all the Matt Smith wankage– and then too disgusted by it– to properly think in DW terms for several weeks. Thus the late appearance of this companion to the Year In Wank.

I was only able to keep up my resolve four hours.
My initial reaction?
This is an outrage!!!!!!
I have been in Doctor Who fandom longer than Matt Smith has been alive. Disgusting.
It can only mean that we’re going to get an even younger person playing the companion, and it will indeed become 90210 In Space. (But hopefully the original version, not the current regeneration airing on the CW.)
Never heard of the guy. Not impressed by the photos– looks all Emo Vampire-y to me, and that’s my least fave kind of thing. (Hope he keeps the longer hair though, because I like the Doctor with longer hair.) Not at all enthused.
I am totally going to have to be won over, preferably within the first five minutes of the regeneration. (Since that’s what happened w/ TENnant for me, and since hopefully Moffatt will be writing the regeneration, or at least heavily advising on it, it shouldn’t be a problem. Unless of course Mr Smith is as made of as much suck as the publicity photos imply.)
(Sultry, Emo looks are all very well and good, but there’s nothing particularly Time Lord-y about them….)
How long will it take, I wonder, for some arse to say, “Oh, he’s worked with Billie Piper again, I’m sure he’ll be happy to work with her on Doctor Who, too.”
All in all, I’m feeling kinda let-down about the whole thing.

I’m squeaking in under the wire, I know, with this entry. The 2009 wank has already begun, thanks to the BBC announcing they were revealing The Eleventh Doctor today. Nevertheless, I present you with the Top Wanks of the Year.
